ADJUST YOUR OWN DENTURES ?
A long-anticipated idea is now a reality in the dental world: patients can adjust their own dentures at home, thanks to a special thermo-sensitive design.
This technology, invented and patented by a Canadian dental technologist, is the first significant improvement to the way dentures are being designed, since the introduction of acrylic itself in the dental field by Dr. George W. Stryker in 1924!
BITEM, which stands for Biocompatible Intraoral Thermo Elastic Material, added to parts of an acrylic denture, softens in warm water and can be inserted and adapted to the mouth. It will cool to body temperature and take on the desired rigidity to fulfill its new function. This process can be repeated over and over to ensure complete comfort for the patient.
It can be extended, for example, into an undercut to mechanically retain a denture, it can be used to produce repeatable thermo-relines, it can retain overdentures on implants, it can create special wings to stabilize lower dentures …and much more.
Of special interest to most people would be that BITEM also entirely replaces "metal hooks" around the teeth on partial dentures and therefore never causes the notorious damage to the tooth enamel!
This "easy to use system" is based on a heat-sensitive, multi-purpose acrylic that provides a complete range of consistencies, from hard to soft, and therefore allows more than two-dozen unique applications to improve dentures, by enhancing fit, esthetics and comfort.
Indeed, in this Age of Self-Help, the greatest advantage for the informed consumer, of course, is the control he/she now has over the fit and the tightness of their dental appliances. But apart from that, the majority of patients would already appreciate to get rid of the pain and the feeling of total helplessness, that usually accompany conventional dentures.
